Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
As 2023 comes to a close, we look back at the significant events in our lives with
family and friends. We have attached a photo slideshow using Photomyne software
highlighting these events. We tried to focus on celebrations as we reached significant
milestones in our life journey like our 50th Wedding Anniversary and our 70th
birthdays!
We begin with our trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in April. We had a wonderful
time at the resort and on the beach. Upon returning home to Albuquerque, New
Mexico, we planned an unforgettable Anniversary Celebration on May 20. We were
able to invite many friends from our new church family at St. Andrew Presbyterian as
well as in-law family members, friends from Arlo's class at Comanche school, and
cousins Barb and Dwight came from Oregon.
We decided to drive from New Mexico to New England with the concept of seeing
friends and family along the way. We managed to stop in Youngstown, Ohio to
spend some time with friends gathering at Paladin Brewing on June 22. We also
managed to visit some dear college friends in Torrington, Connecticut and a cousin in
Pittsburg, Kansas but didn't manage to get any pictures. We then traveled to Warren,
Rhode Island where we celebrated our 50th Anniversary again with many more dear
friends and family.
We spent a few days with our daughter's family in Littleton, Massachusetts before
traveling on to Maine to visit with Esther's siblings. We also traveled to Bangor,
Maine to visit Rick's Aunt Audrey where we met family from New Zealand. We then
went to Poland, Maine where we spent a week relaxing with our children and
grandchildren. Next was a 70th birthday celebration for several family members in
Litchfield, Maine. Many family members joined in the celebration at Woodbury
Pond Park even though it rained hard and most of us got soaked. Some of the
birthday celebrants gathered the next day for a group photograph at Larry
and Doris Parlin's home in Litchfield. We usually pick up our grandson, Arlo,
from school Monday through Thursday, spending after school hours with him
(watching TV, playing games, doing homework). He has also been very involved
with extra-curricular activities such as gymnastics, School of Rock (music),
Thai Kwan Do, swimming, etc.
Esther had tests done and the doctors discovered that her hiatal hernia needs surgical
attention. A surgical consult revealed the need to find an alternative location for the
surgery since it cannot be done in New Mexico because this would be a 2nd hiatal
hernia procedure with the potential for tissue adhesions. She has managed to locate a
surgeon in Concord, Massachusetts, allowing us to stay with our daughter's family in
Littleton for the duration of pre-surgical review and post-surgical recovery. Surgery
is scheduled for June, 2024.
In September, Rick had an esophagram due to swallowing difficulties when they
discovered a "lesion" in his stomach. An Esophageal UltraSound (EUS) was scheduled
and they figured out it was a GIST (Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumor) and lesions
(cysts) on his pancreas were also discovered. The low-risk tumor was removed on
December 11 (no chemo required). The pancreatic lesions will be monitored.
We worked very hard to get our pictures in chronological order, but the last step
reversed them, so they go from December to February.
Again we hope for you a Merry Christmas and a Healthy 2024.
